Executive Coaching in Practice

What does coaching look like in practice? The coaching process is approached in four steps:

Step One: Organization and Client Agree Upon Goals

  • Identify and interview stakeholders to obtain their perspective and clarify their expectations.
  • Establish consensus regarding desired outcomes.
  • Establish a clear understanding and agreement of the process.

Step Two: Identify the Information Needed

  • Understand the executive's behaviors, motivations, skills, values, beliefs and personal attributes that will support the desired outcomes.
  • Information achieved through stakeholder interviews, observation, 360' feedback tools, assessment instruments and performance reviews.
  • Ascertain how the executive's success will benefit the organization and contribute to its mission and strategic plan.

Step Three: Create an Action Plan

  • Identify one or two behaviors to address.
  • Meet biweekly to discuss specific action steps, review progress and clarify next steps.

Step Four: Getting Results and Return on Investment

  • Assess and acknowledge progress.
  • Meet with stakeholders to gather information on behavioral change.
  • Identify accomplishments and areas of improvement from information gathered.
  • The executive conducts a final meeting with stakeholders.
    • Review accomplishments measured against desired outcomes.
    • Determine need for follow up.
