What does coaching look like in practice? The coaching process is approached in four steps:
Step
One: Organization and Client Agree Upon Goals
- Identify
and interview stakeholders to obtain their
perspective and clarify their expectations.
- Establish
consensus regarding desired outcomes.
- Establish
a clear understanding and agreement of the
process.
Step
Two: Identify the Information Needed
- Understand
the executive's behaviors, motivations, skills,
values, beliefs and personal attributes that
will support the desired outcomes.
- Information
achieved through stakeholder interviews,
observation, 360' feedback tools, assessment
instruments and performance reviews.
- Ascertain
how the executive's success will benefit the
organization and contribute to its mission and
strategic plan.
Step
Three: Create an Action Plan
- Identify
one or two behaviors to address.
- Meet
biweekly to discuss specific action steps,
review progress and clarify next steps.
Step
Four: Getting Results and Return on Investment
- Assess
and acknowledge progress.
- Meet
with stakeholders to gather information on
behavioral change.
- Identify
accomplishments and areas of improvement from
information gathered.
- The
executive conducts a final meeting with
stakeholders.
- Review
accomplishments measured against desired
outcomes.
- Determine
need for follow up.
